How the Seven Dwarfs Got Started

Walt Disney Studios released Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, and it quickly became one of the most popular animated films of all time.

Snow White, a beautiful young woman, flees her homeland after her stepmother attempts to have her killed. The story is told by the movie.

She takes refuge in the forest, where she befriends a group of seven dwarfs who live in a cozy cottage. Together, they overcome numerous challenges and ultimately defeat the evil queen.

While the movie is fiction, it is based on a much older fairy tale that dates back to the 18th century. The original story, however, is quite different from Disney’s version.

It is significantly darker and more gruesome. Nevertheless, it remains an enduring classic that has captivated audiences for generations.

The Seven Dwarfs Get Names

According to the original Brothers Grimm story, the dwarfs were not given individual names but were simply referred to as “Doc,” “Grumpy,” “Happy,” “Sleepy,” “Bashful,” “Dopey” and “Sneezy.

It wasn’t until Disney’s 1937 film adaptation that the characters were given more specific names: Doc (originally called Skull), Grumpy (Haircut), Happy (Smiley), Sleepy (Dopey), Bashful (Blush), Dopey (Dreamy) and Sneezy (Stern).

The filmmakers likely chose the names to better reflect the characters’ personalities as they were portrayed on screen.

For example, “Doc” was likely chosen for the character who always gives advice, while “grumpy” was a fitting name for the dwarf who is always complaining.

Over time, people have come to associate these names with the characters themselves, and it’s hard to imagine calling them anything else.

Though they are now known simply as Dopey, Grumpy, Bashful, Sleepy, Happy, Sneezy, and Doc, these lovable little creatures originally had much longer names.

In early drafts of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the characters were Blick, Flick, Glick, Snick, Plick, Whick, and Quee. However, Disney animators decided that these names were too difficult to remember and shortened them to the names we know today.

The Dwarfs may have undergone a few name changes, but their popularity has stood the test.

Thanks to their endearing personalities and the timeless appeal of Snow White’s story, these seven little guys continue to charm audiences nearly a century after their big screen debut.

The Original Snow White from Brothers Grimm

If you’re a fan of fairy tales, then you’ve likely heard of the Brothers Grimm.

Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm were two German scholars who collected and published a number of folk tales, many of which are still famous today.

Their most well-known story is “Snow White,” the tale of a jealous stepmother who betrays a beautiful princess.

Despite the fact that the story has been adapted many times over the years, most people don’t realize that the original version of the story is darker and more violent.

In fact, it wasn’t until the first English translation was published in 1823 that the story began to take on its more familiar form.

So next time you read “Snow White,” remember that you’re actually reading a very old story that has been through many changes over the years.

In the original version, the Evil Queen was not Snow White’s stepmother but her biological mother, and she ordered her huntsman to kill Snow White and bring back her lung and liver as proof.

In addition, the dwarfs in the story were not benevolent protectors but greedy miners who held Snow White captive in their cottage to exploit her labor.

However, over time the stories were sanitized for younger readers, and the dwarves came to be seen as cute and lovable characters. Today, most people are familiar with the names of the seven dwarfs from Disney’s 1937 animated film. In the original story, they were simply known as “the seven.”

Renaming of the Seven Dwarfs

When Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was first being produced in the 1920s and 1930s, the names of the 7 dwarfs were going to be Blick, Flick, Glick, Snick, Plick, Whick, and Quee

When they released the film, they specified the names of the seven dwarfs: Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Dopey, and Sneezy.

The reason for the change is that animators found the original names too difficult to remember.

They also likely wanted the names to better reflect the characters’ personalities as they portrayed them on screen.
